Whether traffic-calmed zones, new cycle highways or roadworks: municipal transport planners often face the question of how changes to infrastructure will affect cycling. With the new RadSim platform, cycling flows can now be simulated precisely and on a data-driven basis. It is available nationwide from now on!

Why simulations are revolutionising cycling planning
Many cities want to tap the potential of cycling, but rebuilding infrastructure often runs into uncertainty in the city council or among the public. A reliable data basis for assessing the effects in advance is missing.
This is exactly where the RadSim research project comes in, which we developed together with TU Dresden and with funding from the German National Cycling Plan (NRVP). Our platform enables municipalities and engineering firms to run data-based traffic simulations and make well-founded decisions.
Typical questions RadSim answers:
- Check network effects: “What happens to traffic flows if an important route or bridge is closed?” (see the Carola Bridge example in the figure below)
- Assess infrastructure: “How does usage change if a segregated cycle path (protected bike lane) is built along a main road?”
- Steer displacement: “Can cycling traffic be shifted out of hazardous areas onto more attractive, safe green corridors?”

Activate your municipality now
After extensive testing with our pilot municipalities, our platform is now being opened up nationwide. The current simulations use real movement data from the STADTRADELN campaign. We therefore invite representatives of all STADTRADELN municipalities to test the platform for their municipality. Interested engineering firms and researchers can register as well and will be notified when further access is enabled.
You gain free insight into the simulated cycling flows of your own municipality based on the STADTRADELN data that already exists – with no elaborate data collection of your own.
